Hundreds Rally in Santa Ana on Day of Decision
By Denise Penn
The Orange County Equality Coalition, together with its coalition partners The Center Orange County, Elections Committee of the County of Orange, Harvey Milk Stonewall Democrats – OC and the Democratic Party of Orange County organized a rally that took place near the Old County Courthouse on Tuesday night following the May 26 decision by the California Supreme Court upholding Prop. 8.
“The Old County Courthouse in Santa Ana is the oldest courthouse in southern California and stood as the symbol of justice and equality in Orange County for more than 50 years,” said BJ Davis, Chair of the Orange County Equality Coalition. “Hundreds of same-sex couples were married in this building during 2008. We decided that this was the best place to meet to discuss the Supreme Court’s ruling and recognize the impact of this ruling on ordinary people in this community,” she continued.
Following the rally, the group marched down Santa Ana Boulevard to the Plaza of the Flags, located in the Civic Center Plaza.
