Remembering Liz St. James

It is with deep regret that I announce the passing of Mark Bonhencamp better known as Liz St. James, Empress 8 and 27 of Orange County and recently with Phoenix Imperial Court.
Orange County is more than a court, it is a “Family Reunion” with each and every fundraiser we have. Today like several I have lost my mom, my mentor, and one of my true friends.
I met Liz St. James in 1995, doing what she loved best: performing. I was in a show with her at the Whistle Stop and she walked up to me and told me that she liked my performance, but girls wear eyelashes! A decade later she still yelled at me about eyelashes!
In 1996 I joined the court system because of that gleam in her eyes when she talked about it. I got my love for the court system from her. When I ran for empress she placed and pinned the crown on my head both times I won – and she only drew blood once! She told all of us how pleased and proud of the family she was.
Shortly after that she became my drag mom. As daughters go I was probably her biggest challenge. I always asked why and I usually got what we now call a Liz-ism (a Liz-made-up word) for my answer.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 12, at the Buena Park Holiday Inn, 7000 Beach Blvd., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
I love you and will truly miss you, mom! Say hi to dad for me!
