Center OC Moves and Grooves

By Bill LaPointe

More than 400 guests turned up at the Hyatt in Irvine on April 25 to support and celebrate the remarkable accomplishments and activities of the Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center of Orange County.
This night could not have been more successful and enjoyable for all attendees. This year’s theme, “Join the Movement, Celebrating the fight for equality 40 years in the making,” encompassed an overview of the past 40 years and recognized the numerous volunteers who devote many hours and tremendous heart to the Center OC. The 2009 Life Achievement Award went to Frank Schools, who tirelessly donates time and money to the Center and other nonprofit organizations.
It was a star filled evening, with Torch Bearer Awards going to Jane Lynch (The L Word) and Peter Paige (Queer as Folk). In addition, Cybil Shepherd, Lynch’s L Word co-star made a surprise appearance to introduce Lynch and present her with the award. Michelle Clunie, Melanie from Queer as Folk, presented the award to her co-star, Peter Paige.
The silent auction was successful, and the live auction sold items for hundreds of dollars above their estimated price.
Several male and female “sheriffs” were available, and for $20 they would handcuff and body-search a designated attendee and escort them to a jail cell. The prisoner could then pay another $20 for their release. It was great fun and a great fundraiser. Rich Cook, musical director for Men Alive, “camped” it up, hiding his face from the paparazzi. Kudos to the organizers of this year’s silent auction, as well as to Michael Buoma and co-chair Kim Cunningham.
Probably the most moving part of the evening was when a 16-year-old man from the Center’s Youth Program shared his story about being hit, kicked and spat upon by his brother, receiving a broken nose from a classmate and being disowned by his father. This bright and articulate young man was saved by the Youth Program and he is growing and thriving with a new family through his participation with the Center. Following his presentation, the Center garnered thousands of dollars in support.
The Center is fortunate to have the continuing support of a strong core of people in our community, but more is needed. If you are looking to donate time, energy and/or money toward a good cause, definitely consider doing so for the Center OC. For more info, visit www.thecenteroc.org.
