Pride Run Kicks Off Marathon Training

If you have ever considered running a Marathon give this some serious thought. The Long Beach Marathon is October 11, 2009 and the Shoreline Frontrunners, a running club of gays, lesbians and their friends, have our own training program. A full marathon is 26.2 miles, and YES you can do it! It does take training and commitment, but if you participate in our training program you will be ready. Training begins with the Pride run on Saturday, May 16. Every Saturday morning after that we meet at 7 a.m. at Ocean and Redondo for our weekly long run.
If you are an average runner or walker you can accomplish a Marathon. The five months of training is designed to take a novice runner to Marathon distance. In addition to our Saturday morning long runs, you do need to be available to run five days per week. We increase our mileage every Saturday by a mile or few, but it does add up to 20 and 22 miles runs. I know it sounds impossible to most short distance runners, but it can be done with the appropriate training.
Marathon training is all about pace. We do NOT run fast! We run slow enough that you can comfortably talk with the other runners while running. If you think of yourself as a slow runner, don’t consider that an issue for running a Marathon. It’s all about the distance, not about the speed. We break up into several pace groups and have a good time together. All are welcome: Gay, Straight, Neighbors, Friends, Whoever. This is our fourth year of Long Beach Marathon training and the group keeps growing. Last year our group was about 20 runners.
We communicate primarily thru email. I send out a weekly email every Thursday detailing our distance and course. Training begins with the Pride Run, May 16th and the Saturday following is a 9 mile run. Begin now, train yourself to run 6 miles and you will be ready to join our Long Beach Marathon training program. Go to www.runlongbeach.com and sign up for the Marathon and commit!
